Action Games
What to Expect: While Battlestations: Midway originally began as more of a sim, the game has evolved into an action game with attention to tactical decisions. Players will have the opportunity to command ships, submarines, and planes in an attempt to annihilate the enemy during World War II in the Pacific theater. The fact that any of the vehicles in the game can be controlled can make the action frantic as players seek to take out enemy vessels and bases while defending their own position. There certainly aren't many games like it out on the market. Players shouldn't expect next-generation graphics from this one, but instead should look for solid action and fast gameplay.
What to Expect: Everyone likes pirates, right? They're sort of like ninjas, samurai, or marines: dangerous, overly romanticized, and fun to control in a video game. In Tortuga, you play as captain Thomas "Hawk" Blythe, who sails along with the infamous Blackbeard. In true pirate fashion, Blackbeard nabs your ship and leaves you behind. As the game progresses, you'll engage in naval combat between galleons pregnant with cannons as well as clang swords on deck and on land. While fighting on the sea, factors like wind, ship direction, ammunition type, and speed will determine success. On land, some limited combos will be available to keep things interesting, as well as special items like Molotov cocktails, one shot pistols, and healing potions.
What to Expect: Rooted in the art style of Imagi Animation Studios' upcoming CG feature, there hasn't been all that much released for TMNT so far. We're assuming pizza is going to be involved. In the hands of such a skilled studio as Ubisoft Montreal, who made Splinter Cell, this one's definitely worth checking on now and then. The game will have lots of acrobatic action, sort of like Prince of Persia from what we've seen, as well as some kind of combo based attacks. Most interestingly, the game will utilize the turtles' ability to work together, as you'll be able to pull of a variety of cooperative moves. We're certainly hoping this doesn't turn into yet another movie to game flop.

What to Expect: If you've played the original Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, you're going to know just about what to expect from the sequel. Players will be part of the Ghost squad again, this time on the US border while trying to protect the country from a major attack. As you might expect from a sequel such as this, there will be a bunch of new options in the arsenal and a load of new gameplay levels with new challenges. While most of the basics will be the same as the console version, GRIN will once again take a hold of the PC version to create more of the experience that PC players are looking for including more tactics and harder gameplay to truly take advantage of the mouse and keyboard interface. While it still looks as though the game won't exactly fit the mold of the original Ghost Recon for the PC, it should still be as fun as the first Advanced Warfighter.
What to Expect: Sometimes referred to as an Oblivion-style first person shooter, we've been waiting for this game for a long time. It's been in development since before 2002, and it appeared for a time to be a dead project. Recently news started to surface that its release was again a reality, though not without some features getting shifted around. You play as a freelance military treasure hunter, known as a Stalker, with the aim to brush aside the mysteries of the 1986 Chernobyl incident. The game is set on a 300 square kilometer map, and gives you the freedom to wander, engage NPCs, hunt animals, and battle freaky mutants. The missions you receive are determined by your actions in the game. It's a living, dynamic sort of world, giving you a sense of freedom normally associated with open-ended RPGs. We'll soon see if it was worth the wait.

Strategy Games
What to Expect: Fans of the Command & Conquer series will see a return to the Tiberium universe that started the whole thing off. This latest chapter in the Earth's collapse into chaos will feature a heavily updated engine used in Generals and Battle for Middle-earth to create some brilliantly stunning battles between the Global Defense Initiative, Brotherhood of Nod, and brand new alien faction. The game will feature a much smoother interface than previous C&C games have seen to help promote the game's fast pace and immediate action. As with previous titles in the Tiberium universe, all factions will have to fight over Tiberium as a resource while trying to destroy the enemy's base. Players can expect multiplayer, skirmish, and three campaigns complete with those famous live action video cutscenes starring all kinds of famous folk.
=============================
What to Expect: Paradox has been offering small incremental changes to their basic Europa Universalis model for years now. This year, however, we're finally seeing a full-fledged sequel. Europa Universalis III still lets you direct the destinies of virtually every world nation in the world between the years of Columbus' voyage and the French Revolution. This time however, the game allows players to choose any start date within that 300-year range and have the game conditions reflect the historical state of the world at that exact moment. Whether you choose to participate in colonization, conquest, or commerce, you'll have the chance to alter history in a variety of interesting ways. This third version of Europa Universalis also features much improved visuals. The world map now takes up a much larger portion of the screen, giving you a much better view of the action. Nice 3D effects also give the title a bit of a boost and distances it from the board game style presentation of previous versions.
==============================
What to Expect: It's been a while since we've had a good RTS space opera to sink our phasers into. Metamorf is the lucky developer given the task of making our dorkiest desires come true when they release Genesis Rising. This real-time strategy game pits galactic commanders against each other in a struggle for total dominance in the galaxy. Unlike many games set in the near future of humanity, this particular title sets the stage far in our future as humans have come to dominate the galaxy through brutal force. Part of their dominance is thanks to technology that has allowed humans to genetically manipulate themselves and their ships to become adaptable weapons capable of morphing into different states in the middle of battle. The engine allows ships to add new parts on the fly and change ship models for new uses. It looked pretty clever at E3 so we're hoping that it lives up to the promise.
===================================
What to Expect: Coming from the developers of the enigmatic Perimeter that turned heads only to confuse many of them, Maelstrom hopes to lay out a more comprehensible storyline with gameplay that might appeal to a larger group of players. In that light, players will fight as one of two different human factions or a third alien faction. Players can expect to battle across an Earth brutalized by wars between corporations where water is a prime resource. KDV Games are using their expertise with environment deformation to create levels that can be adapted on the fly. Terraforming can also have the added effect of allowing water to flow in different ways around the environment, which can have a strong effect on strategy. This one is definitely a "wait-and-see" kind of title, but we're hoping for the best.
====================================
What to Expect: This is a real-time strategy game on a grand scale. Enormous maps, hundred of units fighting onscreen at once, and obscenely large experimental units help this game stand out from the rest of the pack. Controlling either Aeon, Cybran, or UEF factions, players can launch into three single-player campaigns, fight a customizable AI in skirmish mode, or head online to test their strategy skills against humans. We've been playing this in the office recently, and have found Supreme Commander to have a distinct feel to it. Bases in this game grow to monstrous sizes, and the options for fortifying them are staggering. It's a title that demands a different kind of thinking from the strategy gamer, and one we hope computers without top-end components can keep up with.
========================================
What to Expect: The latest in Altar Games' strategy series, UFO: Afterlight, takes place on Mars, where robots threaten a human colony. Unfortunately for the humans, the alien-built robots are programmed to eradicate all traces of other civilizations from Mars. Fighting and explosions are the result. It's up to you to make sure it's the robots who blow up. Afterlight adds more technologies, equipment, and weaponry, a more intricate diplomacy system, and a bigger focus on role-playing elements. This February, we'll see if humans really are better than robots, or if the mechanical creations prove to be our superiors. We're hoping it's the former.
======================================
What to Expect: What if Hitler was successfully assassinated? It's a question nearly anyone who's read about World War II asks themselves. With War Front: Turning Point, it's the backbone of the game. As a result, the United States winds up teaming up with a Hiter-less Germany to ward off Soviet advances into Europe. German and American campaigns of 11 missions each await players in the game, along with some striking cinematics. Expect historical units such as Me-262 and V-2 rockets, as well as Sherman tanks. The game takes its fantasy aspect a step further by adding fictional weaponry like giant exoskeletons and force shield generator tanks. It's a new twist on a theme so utterly overused in gaming. Hopefully the gameplay holds up.

Strategy Expansion Packs
What to Expect: Stardock showed some serious strategy development prowess with last year's sequel to Galactic Civilizations. The first expansion for that sequel sets the galaxy up with the Drengin Empire with the lions share of control. Unfortunately for the Drengins, a splinter group known as the Korath Clan is trying to sieze power in order to institute their genocidal pact against all other races. Players will get to defend against that evil rampage as the Drengin Empire through the story campaign. The game also sees the inclusion of a new playable Krynn Empire race that hopes to spread order through religion amongst the intelligent species of the galaxy. The new playable factions will come along with a bevy of other additions including new ship parts, super abilities, espionage options, restrictions on habitable planets, mega events, epic generator, and hardier AI competitors.

Racing Games
What to Expect: Formerly known as Everglade Rush the poster boy for all things GeForce 3 and hovercraft racing, Fuel has evolved and now has one focus beyond anything else: allowing players to maximize the potentials of a racing experience. The game does this by granting gamers the ability to switch between many different vehicles spread over a wide-open course. In addition to the usual racing off road in Jeeps and other four wheeling cars, Fuel lets us get out of our chosen vehicles and hop into whatever else is available nearby. Combining racing with shoes and traditional racing gives this game an interesting twist.
==========================
What to Expect: Test Drive's focus is its online play, something Atari is describing as Massively Open Online Racing (M.O.O.R.). Whether or not that classification sticks is an entirely different matter, but what it attempts to describe is certainly interesting. TDU takes place on over 1000 miles of highway on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. The idea behind play online is to drop thousands of players into a server and let them interact in sandbox style play. As you race around the huge, open environments you'll be able to participate in online only time trials and races against other opponents, as well as challenge particular opponents by flashing your headlights at them. For those seeking more community, you'll be able to join up with clubs and organize tournaments and competitions. For more, head on over to the object page and check out our extensive coverage.
===================================
What to Expect: The mania part of that title refers to this game's insane track design and high-flying physics. With giant curves, impossible jumps, and speedy cars, this game seems like it aims to deliver an arcade-like experience. We have yet to play it, so we really don't know. Car models look realistic, even though the turns and heights from which they drop could never be accomplished with any pair of tires of shocks available today. Hurtling through metropolitan, mountainous, and dirt track courses, this game has some nice graphics judging by what's been made available. Look for it to be on shelves pretty soon.
Massively Multiplayer Online RPGs
=========================================
What to Expect: Currently in it's beta stages, Vanguard bring a few new elements to the MMORPG table. It's got a distinct visual style, and developer Sigil Games has emphasized that even low level players will get treated to some attractive scenes early on. Sigil also recognizes that traveling around an MMO's vast world can be a giant pain, so they're offering faster modes of transportation early on. For anyone who's played MMO's for a while, that's certainly good news. It's also good news as Vanguard emphases travel and exploration to a larger degree than most MMO's. You'll be able to test out Vanguards flying drakes, wyverns, and griffons very soon, so keep an eye out. Don't literally keep an eye out, though. That would probably be painful.
MMORPG Expansion Packs
====================================
What to Expect: As the creators of the most popular massively multiplayer game to date, the folks at Blizzard have a lot of high expectations to meet with the continuing evolution of World of Warcraft. The Burning Crusade expansion pack is already one of the most anticipated titles of the year and will come with a large amount of content. New areas, including those beyond the Dark Portal from which the orcs attacked in the early RTS titles of the franchise, are only the tip of the iceberg with all sorts of new gameplay features and new Drenei and Blood Elf races. This will undoubtedly be one of the best sellers of the year and draw back some players whose interest waned. We were right about the game slipping from 2006, but it's definitely coming out. In fact, it's out today! Go get it suckers!
Role-playing Games
====================================
What to Expect: We're assuming there's a pretty high degree of familiarity among gamers with this one. It was way back in 2005 when the original came out for the now defunct Xbox console. Since then, BioWare's been retooling some aspects, and adding new content for players that never got around to purchasing Microsoft's big black box. The graphics have been given an upgrade, both with resolution (obviously) and some texture tweaking. Load times have been dramatically reduced, the control scheme has been readjusted to accommodate a mouse and keyboard, and the enemy difficulty has been ramped up. You'll also find some new fighting styles and monster types to smack around. Take that, Xbox from 2 years ago.
====================================
What to Expect: TopWare's RPG is not only of the single player, open ended type, it's also got a multiplayer aspect. Should you choose to check out the solo content, you'll find plenty of third-person real-time combat with bows, swords, axes, and spells. A story is in there as well, along with the opportunity to alter the quests and endings you receive based on your actions and the reputation you build up. Should you happen to get lonely at your computer, Two Worlds lets you head online and play cooperatively over something known as the internet. Fascinating technology nowadays. Expect to find a bunch of other RPG goodies like horse riding, a different kind of spell upgrade system, and pretty visuals.
===========================================
What to Expect: Nature and technology: eternal enemies. Forever, it seems, they've been bitterly engaged in a shifting conflict with neither side gaining a clear advantage. In Silverfall, your actions determine who comes out on top. This game is already out in Europe, and set to release here very soon. It's an action RPG in the Diablo vein, and offers a dynamic world in which your actions determine the method and appearance of a world on which evil is losing its grip. Offering a significant amount of single player content, cooperative play, and a quest creator, this game seems to offer quite a bit of content. Hopefully it turns out to be content worth playing through. Should you take the plunge into Silverfall, expect all sorts of weaponry and magic, plus lots of side quests.
Role-playing Game Expansion Packs
================================
What to Expect: Offering 12 more hours of action-RPG clicking, Titan Quest's expansion pack sends you to hell. Ripping through squads of otherworldly demons is your task in Immortal Throne, as you follow the twists and turns of an all-new storylines. Creating a character will be slightly different this time around, as the system for customizing your fighter has been tweaked and eight new classes included. Existing characters will apparently be able to level up even further with a modified development system. Expect dozens of new beasts and demons to step in your way, along with lots of new deadly instruments with which to hack them to tiny, bloody bits.

Genre: Persistent Online RPG
Release Date: January 30, 2007

Publisher: Blizzard
Developer: Blizzard
Genre: Massively Multiplayer Online Role-playing Game
Release Date: January 16, 2007 (TODAY!)
====================================

Developer: TopWare Interactive
Genre: RPG
Release Date: March 6, 2007
Publisher: SouthPeak Interactive
Developer: TopWare Interactive
Genre: RPG
Release Date: March 6, 2007
===========================================

Adventure Games
What to Expect: DreamCatcher continues it's hold on the adventure gaming market on the PC and Aura 2 looks to be one of the better offerings as of late. You'll play the role of Umang, who finds himself thrust into a plot to still the Sacred Rings, which he finds himself in possession of when he awakes one day in a strange place in a strange world. But before he can get his bearings and figure out what's going on, a sinister clan is chasing them down, since the rings are said to grant immortality and unlimited power. Umang's only choice is to seek out the Keepers, the only people who can safeguard this mysterious talisman. The game boasts a huge number of locations along with around 40 hours of cutscenes and plenty of story. This Myst-like adventure could be something special.
================================
What to Expect: All you need to know is one thing: Gil Grissom is in this game. Oh yes, the enigmatic oft-bearded forensic sleuth from television will be making yet another appearance on your PC. Like in the show, you'll be able to reconstruct crime scenes based on the little bits you find lying around, possibly with the aid of a blacklight that fits in your pocket. Though we don't have any media up on this game, it's likely the game will continue the TV series' strong association of crime solving with blue and yellow neon lights. As we all know, neon lights indicate futuristic and / or scientific stuff is going down. They also apparently catalyze the crime solving process.
=================================
What to Expect: Could this game herald a new age of adventure gaming? While it's true adventure games can still be fun, the formula seems to be pretty tired at this point. Hopefully Cyan Worlds' attempt at making adventuring and solving puzzles a social, connected process is a success. Though this game hasn't had the most stable development cycle, it looks like it actually is coming out. Players will find a large city within which to interact and discuss the happenings of the world. The puzzle areas will be instanced, but you'll be able to bring a few friends along to help figure things out. One twist is how the story works, with players hired by Cyan to wander about spreading bits and pieces of story. How that will actually work, we're not sure, but we hope to find out in the near future.
============================
What to Expect: Humor is missing in most games these days so it's nice to see companies at least trying to breathe the lighter side of life back into interactive entertainment. Pendulo and CDV are hoping that this sequel to 2003's Runaway: A Road Adventure brings the big laughs and generates word of mouth leading to more sales. The art style also helps set this old school adventure title apart from its peers. The cartoony bright colors and faux cell-shading help to create a unique environment which could prove to make a big difference to those looking for visual style for their adventuring across varied locations such as Hawaii, Alaska, under the sea, or on a yacht.
=================================
What to Expect: The plot just keeps thickening right up to a sturdy consistency as Sam & Max, the awesome dectectivating dog and rabbit thing, continue their search for answers in this episodic adventure. The first of the next two episodes to be released has our heroes infiltrating the Toy Mafia once the commissioner's mole in the organization goes quiet. We're sure all sorts of hilarity will ensue or we certainly hope it will in any case. March's episode probably involves Abe Lincoln in some way or another but our information on this episode is shoddy for obvious reasons though we hear from an inside source that it should be the funniest episode to date. Either way, Telltale has made a good start to their episodic franchise and we have high hopes for the continuing story.
Simulation Games
===============================
What to Expect: It takes a special kind of person to survive in a metal tube sliding though the dark waters of the Pacific during World War II. This time-period really marked the passing of naval warfare from being a completely surface oriented affair and the Silent Hunter franchise has been doing naval combat justice for years. This latest shifts the action to the Pacific Theater as players will take control of an American sub and its crew during dangerous confrontations with the Japanese. From what we've seen of the game at this point (which isn't a whole lot), this is going to be one hell of a simulation. It offers up some tremendous visuals and detailed control over some of the most dangerous vessels in the Pacific fleet. If this game turns out as good as it looks, sim fans are in for a delicious feast from the depths of the oceans.
===================================
What to Expect: If you've played Caesar IV, Glory of the Roman Empire, or CivCity: Rome then you basically already know what you're going to get here. While there will be small differences between these other titles, Heart of the Empire: Rome isn't going to shake your foundation much. Those that are itching for another excuse to enter one of the greatest ancient civilizations in order to build a thriving city than this is going to afford that opportunity. Over 100 different buildings under the constant threats of natural disasters like fires will help round out a bustling ancient metropolis as you help meet the demands for food, safety, and wealth while gaining political favor in the great grab for power that was Rome.
=================================
What to Expect: In an effort to appeal to the more casual gamer that still wants a bit of that Sims experience, EA recently announced the first of their new line of Sims games. Life Stories will allow players to manage the lives of two main characters through a comic romantic plot. Lead characters are both male and female and involve different plots so that players can experience both sides of the coin. We're certainly curious to see how well the idea is followed through with these less intense Sims experiences. EA wants to capture the laptop crowd with this one so they made it a stand-alone experience that doesn't require any other Sims products to play.
